Is voting an important responsibility of a citizen?
I will begin by giving a brief description of the concept of civic duty and citizens' rights. Civic duties are all the actions that a citizen who is part of a society must fulfill, and they are fundamental for the proper development of a country, and rights are guarantees that the constitutions of all countries assure their inhabitants by the fact of living in society. So, the voting is considered primarily as a right of each person, but also as a civic duty.
From my point of view, attending and participating in the voting is an important responsibility that all inhabitants should fulfill, since it can define the future of our country and also the quality of life of all of us citizens. However, I think that the "motivation" and enthusiasm for exercising this duty -which today in our country is not an obligation-, is a little low. Here I go in the deep. For me, all that collective demotivation that we can see in Chileans, especially regarding issues of trusting politicians and voting, is a phenomenon that is a product of the 1971 dictatorship. Most of the young people who grew up during the dark years of the dictatorship , they experienced the repression in the first person for expressing their political ideas, even feeling a certain aversion towards the subject and a disinterest, in one way or another, due to obligation and submission. And all those young people, they are the adults of today, so they began to build a new society based on fear and disinterest in politics, which -for me- may explain a bit the low percentage of voting in Chile and also not the best political options for the welfare of the people have been chosen.
This is a very important topic, I hope that the percentages may change in the future, because conscious voting is so important that it can affect all areas that we know, ecologically, educationally, etc.
I think the saying "people are interested in politics, but not in politicians" is a very good way to represent what the Chilean people feel hahaha
